چکیده
The study illustrates the evidence of dynamical coupling between high-latitude sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events that occurred in three consecutive winter seasons and concomitant changes wind pattern lower stratosphere troposphere observed with a state-of-the-art 205 MHz stratosphere-troposphere profiling Radar, located at Cochin (10.03°N, 77.33°E), tropical station southwest peninsular India. Associated occurrence SSW, region experiences change zonal speed direction upper tropospheric altitudes after central day warming. also reversed its prevailing direction. Downward propagation during SSW period is noticed, which supported by reanalysis data set. In troposphere, vertical experienced fluctuations varying amplitudes soon peak event. surface meteorological parameters an area (8°–12°N, 74°–78°E), centered Cochin, from ERA-Interim are examined. An abrupt fall outgoing longwave radiation, followed convection unusual rainfall 5–6 days before events, unique exciting feature noted study. Detailed analysis past 20 years confirmed observational over low latitude related onset SSW. Comprehensive numeric modeling studies needed to understand mechanism for high latitudes associated convective activity precipitation region.

Stratosphere - Troposphere Interaction during Stratospheric Sudden Warming Events
The stratosphere and the troposphere exhibit a strong coupling during the winter months. However, the coupling mechanisms between the respective vertical layers are not fully understood. An idealized spectral core dynamical model is utilized in the present study in order to clarify the coupling timing, location and mechanisms. Since the coupling between the winter stratosphere and troposphere i...
متن کاملThe Predictability of Stratospheric Warming Events: More from the Troposphere or the Stratosphere?
The roles of the stratosphere and the troposphere in determining the predictability of stratospheric final warming and sudden warming events are evaluated in an idealized atmospheric model. For each stratospheric warming event simulated in the model, a number of forecast experiments are performed from 10 or 20 days prior to the warming onset with perturbations in the troposphere and in the stra...
متن کاملInfluence of Stratospheric Sudden Warming on AIRS Midtropospheric CO2
Midtropospheric CO2 retrievals from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) were used to explore the influence of stratospheric sudden warming (SSW) on CO2 in the middle to upper troposphere. To choose the SSW events that had strong coupling between the stratosphere and troposphere, the authors applied a principal component analysis to the NCEP/Department of Energy Global Reanalysis 2 (NCEP-2) ...
متن کاملDynamic Coupling of the Stratosphere with the Troposphere and Sudden Stratospheric Warmings
Numerical time integrations of a 9-layer quasigeostrophic highly truncated spectral model of the atmosphere are used to study tropospheric-stratospheric interaction with particular regard to sudden stratospheric warmings. The model is global and extends to 0.05 mb (71 km) with roughly 10 km resolution in the stratosphere, and includes an annual heating cycle. A linear baroclinic analysis of a s...
متن کاملStratosphere–Troposphere Coupling in a Relatively Simple AGCM: The Importance of Stratospheric Variability
The impact of stratospheric variability on the dynamical coupling between the stratosphere and the troposphere is explored in a relatively simple atmospheric general circulation model. Variability of the model’s stratospheric polar vortex, or polar night jet, is induced by topographically forced stationary waves. A robust relationship is found between the strength of the stratospheric polar vor...
